Kitchener, Ontario – October 20, 2026
GeoMate, a leader in AI-powered HD mapping solutions, has completed a comprehensive high-definition map of the City of Kitchener to support the safe deployment of next-generation mobility technologies. The HD map will serve as foundational infrastructure for future transportation planning, enabling advancements in autonomous vehicles, connected mobility, traffic simulation, and active transportation safety.
The $1,745,000 project was made possible through the Ontario government's investment of $580,000 through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) R&D Partnership Fund, alongside support from the City of Kitchener.
The completed HD map provides a detailed digital representation of Kitchener’s transportation network, including road geometry, lane configurations, intersections, sidewalks, cycling infrastructure, traffic controls, parking areas, and other key mobility assets. This digital foundation can support practical municipal use cases such as traffic engineering, transit accessibility, parking optimization, asset management, road safety planning, digital twin development, and future autonomous shuttle deployment.
For municipalities, accurate and up-to-date transportation data is becoming increasingly important as cities prepare for next-generation mobility. HD maps can help cities simulate road changes before implementation, analyze connectivity between transit hubs and major destinations, identify underused parking capacity, support maintenance and upgrade planning, and improve road safety analysis. These capabilities can help public agencies make more informed infrastructure decisions while preparing for connected and automated mobility systems.
For GeoMate, the project provided an important opportunity to validate its AI-powered HD mapping technology at city scale, strengthen its production workflows, and demonstrate the value of Ontario-made mapping technology in real municipal environments. The project also supported GeoMate’s commercialization pathway by showing how its technology can serve both public-sector planning needs and advanced mobility applications.
For Kitchener and OVIN, the project demonstrates how collaboration between government, municipalities, and Ontario technology companies can accelerate innovation in smart mobility. By investing in homegrown technologies, the initiative helps strengthen Ontario’s position as a leader in connected, automated, and intelligent transportation systems.
“Completing the Kitchener HD Map is an important milestone for GeoMate and for the future of smart mobility in Ontario. With support from the Ontario government through OVIN, and in collaboration with the City of Kitchener, we were able to validate our AI-powered mapping technology at city scale and demonstrate how high-definition maps can support safer, smarter, and more efficient transportation systems. This project has strengthened GeoMate’s technology, advanced our commercialization pathway, and created a digital foundation that can help Kitchener and Ontario remain at the forefront of next-generation mobility innovation.”
- Amin Gharebaghi, CEO, GeoMate
